Give Before You Get

“There’s an old folk song about a thirsty traveler who comes across a pump in the desert. An attached note explains that there’s a jar of water buried nearby to prime the pump. You’ve got to give before you get, the note says. It is up to the traveler to decide whether to drink the water from the jar or take a chance that the small amount of water invested will result in an unlimited supply of cold, clear water. So it is with going the extra mile. You’ve got to give before you get. You cannot expect to receive generous rewards and then decide what to give in return. You must give freely and have faith that the rewards will eventually come. As clergyman Frank Crain once said, “You may be deceived if you trust too much, but you will live in torment if you do not trust enough.” (Napoleon Hill Foundation)

Are You On The Fence?

Most network marketers can relate to the above quote at one time or another during their career.  Making daily decisions about “what to do” seems to challenge us all sooner or later as we learn which activities bring about the most results in our home based businesses.

With everyone being challenged in determining their priorities of the day, we must make wise choices.  Unfortunately, many times our familiar “friend”, procrastination, gets the nod when it comes to doing our daily business activities….but that’s another article!

Simple Gifts

Company Leadership – Is It A Viper or Just Viperous?

So you have dug deep…down into the hidden crevices of your thoughts and ideas…and you’ve discovered your desire to build a home based business to work from home.  And you’re anxious to get started!  You start surfing the internet for ideas and oh boy…you have certainly got lots of choices! 

Today…before your head hits the pillow tonight…you’re going to pick one…a company, that is.  It’s on your “to do list” for today and you’ve decided that it WILL be marked off your list by bedtime.

Wait, wait, wait a minute here!  Have you read the last 5 posts on this blog?  Do you think there might be a wiser way to approach selecting your network marketing company IF you hope to create success for the long term?

Let’s take another look at a situation…a very real experience for MANY network marketers in their “Tales of Networking”.  You might want to

give it a read so that you can avoid this one as told by the author of “Success In 10 Steps”, Michael Dlouhy.  Here’s what Michael had to say… 

“Watch out for your viperous MLM upline!

They can get you good. You need to make it a point to know who your upline is. I just spoke with a lady last night on a 3-way phone call. She was the first woman in this network marketing company who built so quickly that she went to the top of the payplan in 4 months.

Her upline was envious and jealous. And part of her network marketing strategy was NOT to read the company Policies & Procedures. Bad, bad combination.

Before You Ever Join Any Company, Thoroughly Read Your P & Ps

Before this lady built the program, she did tell the company that her fiance was promoting another MLM company.

But guess what? Her company’s Policies & Procedures state that you cannot make any money from another network marketing company – not even an affiliate program! If you violate this provision, you can be terminated.

And these restrictions apply to everyone living in YOUR household!

Now to me, that sounds like you’re an employee. If you’re an MLM independent contractor, how can they put those kinds of restrictions on you?

Anyway, this lady built to the top of the payplan. She was rocking and rolling. Everything was great. She was about to receive a $7,000 bonus check for reaching the top of the payplan – first woman to ever do it -

- and all of a sudden her website is turned off. Everything is shut down. The company didn’t even send her a letter.

Bad News From the Viperous Upline!

Her upline called and told her she was terminated because her fiance was in another program. She had already told the company they weren’t married and that he was in another program. So it had nothing to do with her or her network marketing strategy, but because they lived in the same household, the company used that lever to get her out of the line of compensation.

The company views 2 people living in the same household as if the two people are the same. And they can do that because it’s in the Policies & Procedures.

Isn’t that amazing?

What are the chances the company would ever find out about this if not for the viperous upline? Because this lady just got terminated, her sponsor inherits her entire organization. It all rolls up.

The Upline Couldn’t Build It Themselves‚ And Now They Don’t Have To!

I know a number of network marketers who have lost everything, because they never read their Policies & Procedures. Go to your company website right now, and read your P & Ps. You may be astonished at what you find.

FACT: When you joined your company, you checked a box stating that you agreed to abide by each of those P & Ps. But I’ll bet you never actually read them!

Which reminds me of a trap that a lot of network marketing reps fall into. They think, “Well, everybody I know is violating this rule. The company must not care.” Believe me, you can violate any rule you want, so long as you’re not making any money. But once you start to build a significant income, THAT is when it’s worthwhile for your viperous upline – or your company itself – to terminate you for violation of your Policies & Procedures.

What’s in there that YOU don’t know about? Go find them and read them. Now!”

You better believe that reading your policies and procedures for ANY company that you’re considering joining should be very close to the first thing you do BEFORE you agree to anything and especially before you pay any money to join the company.  Would you go to work for a brick and mortar company without knowing anything about them and how they operate?  Don’t do it in network marketing either.  And, as Michael said, if you’re already in a company…go find your policies and procedures and read them today! 

Oh…many people say, “they wouldn’t do that to me because _______”, you fill in the blank.  Guess again!  They will if they need to or want to.  Is that where you want to invest your precious time and money…building a business that you’re not sure when they’ll tell you “you’re done”?  Probably not.  Don’t just read the “Terms and Conditions”.  Insist on reading the “Policies and Procedures”.  If you can’t find them on their website; or your wanta-be sponsor won’t get them for you; or they say you have to join first….run, run, run!

Every time we have ever seen a company or downline explode and go away, it does so because of the same 2 reasons: GREED and EGO.

True leaders are the Mentors with the servant’s heart. It’s never about the money. No Money Focus = No Greed. Build people and people will build the business.

People are people. They are not a number. They have goals, dreams & desires.

Network marketing is not a sales business. Network marketing is a teaching & mentoring business. So the track record & attitude of leadership is important. The simplest check you can do is to go to http://www.google.com , take the names of the leaders, stick them in quote marks (“name”), and search each name. If there are any big negatives about these people anywhere, they will probably come up in this search.”

In this industry if your product is not remarkable, you are invisible. You need a product people will buy even with no compensation plan. I get calls from people who tell me they’re searching for a product that truly inspires them.

And that is exactly the wrong way to go about this.

What I tell them is to search to find a mob of people raving about a product … THEN – Fall in Love With THAT Product! Be a passionate advocate for it. Find a product with a HUGE market and fall in love with it. Some people love to work for companies with a product that fits their self-image … but they can’t make a dime on it.

Do yourself a favor. Focus on the people. Focus on the market. Choose a product that everyone else wants. And then, as you build your people, let them know the wisdom of doing the same thing.”
