What’s Your Primary Personality Color?

As you invest your time and effort each day into building your home based business opportunity to work at home, sometimes there are challenges.  Those challenges nearly alway include people!  Do you think it might help to understand HOW those people think?  Honestly, it also helps to understand HOW YOU think, since you’re also a common denominator in every interaction of the day.

In the last post, we talked a bit about determining if someone is “direct” or “indirect”.  If you haven’t already read that, please do so. 

You’ll soon notice that EVERYONE wants to say, “Well, I’m all four personality types…I must be a well-balanced person.”  And, to a degree, that’s true.  There is SOME of all four personality types within each of us.  In any given situation, we pull out the strengths we need to function to the best of our ability right then. 

But, if you’ll pay attention to your behavior, you’ll begin to notice some primary characteristics…some behavior that is more typical of you in the majority of circumstances.  Or even when you’re alone…pay attention to what you’re doing and how you’re doing it.  You’ll find clues as to what your primary characteristics of behavior are in a typical day.

I strongly suggest that you get our ebook and read it right away.  You need ALL the priceless information in that ebook if you want success in your business…you just have no idea how your perspectives will change regarding what works and what doesn’t in network marketing.  And one piece of that big puzzle is about the Personality Colors.  When you better understand how people think…yourself and those you’re communicating with…you will notice your interactions with others become more harmonious, more productive, more pleasant, for sure.

So, let’s take a look at the four different primary personality types as described by Michael Dlouhy in our free ebook, “Success In 10 Steps”.  You can download the book HERE if you don’t have it yet.

Take a good look at the four descriptions and have fun with it…it’s great fun with your family and your colleagues and friends.  And, you will understand yourself and others as if you’ve got a ‘crystal ball’.  I didn’t say you would agree with them…but you will understand more closely where they’re ‘coming from’.

THE FOUR PRIMARY PERSONALITY TYPES:  (in NO particular order of importance or preference)

A)  YELLOW:  OPEN AND INDIRECT

If the person does NOT consistently demonstrate more concern for others than for themselves, they are not Yellow.

Now the person who comes up is casually dressed. They have Birkenstock sandals on, and blue jeans. Very casual. This is a comfortable person. They walk at a slower pace. They have an easy smile.

And they say “Mentor me!”

“OK. Here’s what I know about you. You are an amazing person. All your friends think you are the greatest listener they’ve ever known. You are dependable. You’re very patient. And you’re nurturing. You love people, and you’re a team player. You have some outstanding strengths.

There are some problems you need to work on. You’re oversensitive. You take things personally. You always conform. You’ll buy other people’s excuses. And You don’t ever set goals. You’re not goal-oriented.

So for me to help you, coach you, mentor you, I’d get You to understand how to not take things personally.

B)  BLUE:  OPEN AND DIRECT  

If the person is NOT a social animal, craving almost constant contact with people, they are not Blue.

This person walks up, and you see flamboyant facial expressions, hand movements, body movements, arms moving, maybe a Hawaiian shirt. Something bright & flashy – jewelry, gold, a diamond ring, gold necklace. Anything flashy, a lot of movement, excited, excited, excited.

And they say “Mentor me!”

“OK. The reason you are so successful in life and in business is that you are an excellent promoter. You’re energetic, enthusiastic, motivating, convincing. You always see the big picture. You’re the life of the party, and You’re one of the most creative people on the planet.

You can create it, but you can’t build it. Your problem is, you are unorganized. You’re scattered. You’ve never balanced a checkbook in your life.

The first thing I’d do in mentoring you would be to help You start using systems to keep yourself organized. Then you won’t be so scattered. And you can focus on your follow-up. That can change Your life overnight.

C)  GREEN:  SELF-CONTAINED AND INDIRECT  

If the person is NOT analytical, always wanting more and more information about whatever it is they’re interested in, they are not Green.

A gentleman walked up and stopped. He read the big banner. His arms were crossed. He had a shirt with a breast pocket, pen in the pocket. He wore khaki green pants, a crease down the middle where they’d been ironed, and penny loafers.

He looked at me and ordered, “Mentor me!”

“If I was to be coaching you, I’d start working on Your weaknesses. Your weaknesses are that you overanalyze everything. You’ve lost a ton of money because of your inability to make a decision. You’ll sit there and think about it, think about it, analyze it, wonder why you shouldn’t do it, why the glass is halfempty.

“You have a problem with depression – you easily get depressed. You have a problem with loneliness. And you’re very pessimistic.

“But it’s amazing how many strengths You have. You’re one of the most organized people. You are an amazing planner. You’re a dependable problem solver. You are task persistent. You are amazing on follow through. And everything you do is accurate.

“But the problem you’ve struggled with your whole life is being pessimistic about everything. You have no belief that You will ever be a huge success in life. You’re always looking at why it’s not going to work. You think, ‘It’ll work for everybody else, but it’s not going to work for me.’

“You use a lot of words like try, maybe, could, possibly, we’ll see.

“And what I would do to coach you is to help you realize that You have to learn to be decisive. You have to learn to go with it, be tuned in to your gut feeling and go with it.

“The words you speak are critical, because you speak Your reality into existence. When you say negative things, you are actually putting those things into Your life. That’s exactly what you do. And that’s why You’re so unhappy.”

D)  RED:  SELF-CONTAINED AND DIRECT

If the person does NOT consistently talk about themselves and their achievements, then they are not Red.

This section is purely hypothetical, because Red would NEVER ask anyone to mentor them. And if you try, they won’t pay any attention to you … because they are Red.

“It’s my way or the highway!”

So most Reds are not open to any coaching, even one little bit. Only when life has totally knocked them for a loop, then they may open up a bit to coaching.

Let’s say you’re dealing with THAT person. Here’s what you say: “You have great strengths. You are an amazing producer. You are the best negotiator. You have energy to burn. You are a risk taker, a leader. You have confidence. You take action. And You’re independent. You’ll just take right off and start doing it.

But there are problems, too. The first thing you need help with is your ego. You think you’re perfect. You think you’re always right. You think you’re the only one with an idea. But you’re not.

You are domineering. You are short-tempered. And the biggest problem you have is, You are just unteachable. The only time you can ever learn from anyone else is when you’ve had your butt kicked, when you’re down on the ground, down on your knees, and you reach up your hand. When you finally get there, THEN You are coachable.

The biggest thing that would make a huge difference in Your life is to understand the other personalities. They all have great value, equal to yours, and you don’t realize that.

This will totally change Your life. But the fact is, you’ll probably never do it – because you are Red.”

A WORD OF CAUTION: FOCUS ON YOUR STRENGTHS, NOT YOUR WEAKNESSES!  BUILD ON YOUR STRENGTHS!!!

By now, you’ve probably selected which of the four personality types you might be in a typical situation on any given day of your life.  Now, have fun with deciding which personality type is everyone else in your life!  It’s an on-going journey of fun! 

The point of all of this ‘fun’ is that you can better understand AND COMMUNICATE with someone…be it a family member, a friend, a business associate, a client, or a total stranger at the grocery store.  And, when YOU understand where THEY are coming from and how THEY think, then you can adjust your perspective and tone to something more compatible with THEM.  If you talk in THEIR “language”, your communication efforts will be much more productive…for both of you.

Remember, the past is over…you can’t change it so there’s no need to “figure it out”; the future isn’t here yet, so stop worrying about “what might happen”.  All you have is Right Now, This Present Moment, and YOU are in TOTAL CONTROL of what you’re thinking Right Now and what You decide to do in This Moment.  That’s all.  It’s YOUR choice.  So, choose it for yourself or allow it to happen by default…auto-pilot.  I think you KNOW which way is more productive…both Now and for the future outcome.  I will Believe In You until You Can Believe In Yourself, but YOU make the choice to get involved.  I suggest you “do it by the book”.  Blessings on your day, my Friend!

Colors will bring your way.  Are you Blue, Green, Yellow, or Red? 

The ‘Mentoring For Free’ personality colors skill provides you with a method you can use to determine the personality of the person you’re speaking with so you can make the best possible connection with that person.  This is useful in both your personal life and your networking business.

Michael Dlouhy (Founder of Mentoring For Free) reminds us all the time, “You are perfect just the way You are to do this business”.  You don’t have to change Who You Are…but it will be quite helpful to understand more about why people say and do the things they do. 

Coaching by the Color is one dimension of our personality training that will help You keep your Team pulling together.

The first consideration we learn is to determine if someone is: Open or Self-Contained; Direct or Indirect.  Here are some helpful definitions of those terms:

Open:  Accessible, having NO obstacles to self-expression, freely shares thoughts and emotions; or

Self-Contained:  Shows self-control, formal and reserved in manner, hesitant to share feelings.

Direct: Talks more than listens, dominates conversations; or

Indirect: Listens more than talks, gives concise answers.

Knowing the answer to the above two options will narrow it down from a choice of 4 personalities down to 2 possibilities…when you’re considering what personality type you are…or someone you are talking to. 

Do you sometimes wonder why you just can’t stand listening to certain people talk?  Have you noticed that others sometimes just won’t listen to what you’re saying to them?  Would you like to know how other people think?  What about yourself…would you like to understand why YOU do things the way you do?  There are reasons.  And when you understand the four personality types…how they think, why they do things the way they do, why some people are so annoying to us, and vice versa…well, it will become so clear to you. 

And, best of all…it’s so much fun to learn and apply the personality colors techniques.  You’ll be amazed at the clarity it brings to your life. 

In our NEXT post, we’ll take a look at the 4 personality types which we refer to as Yellow, Blue (both Open); Green and Red (both Self-Contained); Yellow and Green personality types are Indirect; Blue and Red Personality types are Direct.  More on that later.

As always, please remember that the past is over and done; it cannot be changed.  The future isn’t here yet, so you can stop worrying about what “might happen”.  Today, This Present Moment, Right Now is ALL we have.  We are in total control of what we are thinking and doing Right Now.  Ask yourself if it is moving you forward, or contributing to a failure outcome.  If the latter, YOU can change that Right Now by thinking differently.  It’s up to You.
